There are a lot of Americans and Montana citizens who would love to get rid of property taxes, and go with a sales and income tax. If government allow this to happen , government would be at the mercy of the economy. In a good economy there would be lots of money for government to spend. In a bad economy , they would have less. This is why they like a property taxes, because no matter what the economy is doing, they know there are x amount of homes and businesses , and farms for them to tax. They do not care what the economy is doing, if a home owner can not pay his taxes, he loses his property.

Fred, how about Livingstone’s suggestion:
“Montana should be the richest state in the lower 48 but we’re far from it, however if we develop our resources wisely I can envision a time when we will be ranked in the top five states in family income, when there will be no state income tax, and when every resident of the state will get a check from the state representing their share of state resource revenues (just like they do in Alaska).”

He did not include property taxes but maybe he forgot.

One more thing on property taxes, they are also a form of discrimination . I could have bought a HUD reposes home, this home was 200o sq. ft. with a big two car garage, and a big property for 40,000 dollars. I could afford the $40,000, but if I had fix up the home , the property taxes would have skyrocketed up and I could not afford the new tax.
